There are some things that I don’t understand Like lyin’ and callin’ it news Or savin’ things you’ll never use Or not playing for fear you might lose Or why a man learns that it don’t pay to judge Only after he’s paid some steep dues The mistakes of a life take a lifetime to make And a lifetime may seem like a lot But I’m tellin’ you friend it is not And a lifetime is all that you got And it won’t matter much at the end of the line So you might as well give it a shot Chorus Born with no clue and long way to go Not heeding my guardian angel 62 years of learnin' too slow I’d slow down more if only I was able Bridge It ain’t easy come by Yet so quickly gone One wonders how fast to hold on There are still things in life that I don’t understand Like how can I still feel need After all I have learned and have seen And why some cuts do not bleed And why in the hell do some men have to die Before from their prison they’re freed

Sweet Hawaii 03:31
When I return to sweet Hawaii And see her waving from the shore I'll run to her and ease her crying And I will leave her never more And on the shores of Sweet Hawaii The swaying palms and orchid air The ocean breeze so satisfying My love and I so happy there Every single night Neath moonlight shining bright We'll walk across the sand And hold each other tight When I return to sweet Hawaii Oh I will leave her never more Oh I will leave her never more

No dear, you're wrong, you did not see me cry That ol' crazy moonbeam just caught in my eye And no that is not a tear on my face It's just I been standin' Out in the rain We've been so close since we were only ten And we made our solemn pact we'd always be friends I've had my heart break a million times since then And that's why I'm standin' Out in the rain The raindrops fall Upon my cheeks And hide the truth I will not speak You'll never see Tears of this clown As long as the rain keeps cascading down I'll be alright, now you two have fun And I'll do my best to stay out of the sun You'll give him your heart and leave me my pain And I'll go on standin' Out in the rain No dear, you're wrong, you did not see me cry That crazy ol' moonbeam just caught in my eye And if you still need me to try and explain Well just come and find me Out in the rain That's where you'll find me Out in the rain

Eyes like the breeze on a warm afternoon Soft as the mood warming me through Voice soft and sweet like the chorus of a tune Whispers my name, whispers I love only you Love you in good times and love you in bad My love I vow this to you Love you in happy and love you in sad My love I vow this to you Be here in sickness I'll be here in health Have and to hold if poor or in wealth Promise to take you from this day until Death do us part I vow now I will Love you in good times and love you in bad My love I vow this to you Love you in happy and love you in sad My love I vow this to you

24 December, 1950 Stuck out on a hilltop coldest winter in history They took away our sleeping bags so we won't sleep too hard It's a deadly game of chance to fall asleep while standing guard We march 13 hours almost at a run With 40 pounds upon my back and a heavy mortar gun Running til we're next to dead and never knowing why My tired body so overwhelmed that I could drop and cry Tell mamma I'm comin home And tell her not to cry Tell mamma I'm safe and warm Daddy please tell her this lie Light an extra candle on the Christmas tree tonight Freezing beneath my heavy coat a sudden warning cry Massing there to cross that bridge and overtake our side The roaring of quad 50s ripping through the night Enemy flesh is torn to shreds with very little fight 200 cold and glazing eyes upon that bridge A thousand soldiers marching slow across a distant ridge We take up our positions along that river road Persistent premonition it leaves me so damned cold Muffled voices on the road a sudden cry of hault With hand grenade tensions explode and all hell is breaking out I never thought I'd shoot a man but survival's a savage need Two clips empty into the night knowing well it's them or me Don't know how many I caused to die shooting blind at best I only know the next GI lies lifeless, faceless, dead Then turn to realize my fighting friends have all pulled back Out in no-man's land I face my own outfit's attack Tell mamma I'm comin home And tell her not to cry Tell mamma I'm safe and warm Daddy please tell her that lie Daddy I'm so scared tonight Put an extra candle on the Christmas tree tonight The aftermath is strangely quiet in dawning of new day It's only then I realize shrapnel's torn apart my leg And even as I'm helping in the loading of the dead My mind is halfway beneath the covers of a warm hospital bed Tell mamma I'm comin home And tell her not to cry Tell mamma I'm safe and warm Daddy this time it ain't a lie Daddy I got lucky last night Put an extra candle on the Christmas tree tonight
