Ain't nothin' new in what I'm sayin' No innovation in the chords I'm playin' My melodies are forgettable My rhymin' schemes so predictable This song may as well be empty if it weren't for you Ain't no excitement in the path I'm walkin' No revelation in the words I'm talkin' My dull routine is so mundane I live today just like yesterday My world may as well be empty if it weren't for you Empty words, empty tunes Each empty note I sing goes out to you There it's freshened up and made true Each tired thought of mine comes back renewed Ain't no big deal to hear me singin' My voice won't no awards be bringin' The charts will never even know my name If I quit or write again it's all the same My music would fall silent if it weren't for you

No I can't 04:53
I used to write songs I felt my words were true and strong I once wrote with no doubt My words would fairly spill out Chorus Now I can't No I can't Now I can't recall What inspired me When I was younger My music made me feel sure My art it feels contrived now Not so unlike these lines now When a man loses faith In the thoughts that once made him brave How does he get the fire back Wish I could find someone to tell me that Tell me, tell me, can you tell me that? I've become so cynical This all just seems so trivial Yet with as strong as it once burned I keep thinking the flame might return

Play it down 02:49
Play it down, play it down Pass the script spread it all around Play it down, play it down Pick up your orders today You got your briefing, we got our reasons Now go and paint this pretty face on things And if they ask you what you believe in And how it reconciles with what you been Preserve the image, we'll stick together It doesn't matter what you really do Swear your allegiance and in the back room We'll count the scratch and we'll do right by you And if they break the line they gonna learn how one we are The machine's gonna take 'em down That machine's gonna spin it round and round If you get dirty we'll clean your fingers And all you have to do is talk that talk We'll blame the sinners, you'll walk away clean Until the next time that we make that call
4.
Let it shine 04:17
You're a star under cover Unrecognized and undiscovered Let it out, out from under You've got to let it shine You're a stamp made from rubber Every day is like the other Keep it down well and covered No one can see it shine There's conflict thriving in your mind Keeps you off balance all the time You think it's there yet you wonder Should you just let it shine You're a muse, smart and clever Rare insight and with rolled together Classic and poignant, relevant ever You've got to let it shine You're a cog with a number Interchangeable with another Don't push too hard, you might not recover If you let 'em see you shine
5.
When a single candle burns Though it grew out from just a spark Not only does it scorch the virgin wick But it splits the dark With a single clanging gong You could drive thickest silence away One solid crash would be enough to jolt A sleepy public awake When you feel you?re just one soul And there?s nothin? you can do Take a stand that?s all your own Something big could start with you When a single baby cries A tired mother soon learns If she doesn?t attend that wailin? baby?s needs The child becomes a curse When a single shout rings out A mob can spring alive And the ones who try to hold the torrent back Are lucky to survive
6.
When you mind is thawed and all your thoughts come pouring forth Will you act upon the visions that you own? Will you take a stand naked and alone? Can you stand the shame of maybe being wrong? Are you ever gonna make it happen or is it only talk That keeps the dream just floating 'round? Are we ever gonna see a change made like that you say you want? And if you fail will you carry on? When your heart is brave and all the thrill comes rushing on Will you keep your head and step into the throng? Will you take a stand against any vicious wind that might tear at you And try to do you in? Those gripes we've heard before Those plans are getting old Windless sails will never take you too far When your resolve is strong and every bone within you cries Will you lead the way beyond those repeating lies? Will you give it up for something else unknown? For those vague rewards that make life worth living for?
7.
Open sky looking down Here am I stuck firmly on the ground Wondering why I'm feeling I should be up there somehow Should be enough to know you're gone Enough to know this senseless urge is wrong Knowing all too well that this old ache goes on and on Endless puffs of clouds are wafting across endless skies so blue Endless memories are wasted like times I should have spend with you You looked out, you took care I acted brash and reckless 'cause you were there But I would stand rooted while you were soaring through thin air How I long for your sky Oh you loved your freedom and so would I If I could like you just open up my heart and fly
8.
You hold it in your hand You turn it in your mind You dress it up and strip it down You leave no trace behind You toss it in the air You probe it for a sign You paint it nice and slowly dip it in The water's feeling just fine So you float it out there for the people to see But you cloud it with so much smoke who knows really what it might be? You sell it as the plan to set the righteous free And if anyone should stand in your way they hate your liberty You fashion justice and hope out of hubris and greed You forge a trail that leads straight up from the people in need

Words 03:07
I had words and I wrote 'em down but now I can't recall what they went on about Something new and something fresh but now I find I can't evoke the rest At the time they meant something strong they were crafty, hard-hitting but now they're gone They driftin' far away, they kinda ringin' hollow now My words were gonna change the globe but somehow they go mired after starting slow I wrote 'em down but now they die away to some obscure far off forgotten place They driftin' far away, they kinda ringin' hollow now Words reveal my soul lay it bare for you to see Words scrawled on the page make it fair for you to judge me I wrote words when my heart was hot but now I can't know if they were sincere or not They felt so critical at the time but now I wonder I'd said anything to make 'em rhyme They driftin' far away, they kinda ringin' hollow now
10.
I would apologize to you If I had done the things you do I marvel how you spout those lies That go unchallenged all the time IÂ?d feel a darkness in my soul If I would tow the line you tow I wonder how you find your sleep When you must keep the lies you keep ThereÂ?s a morninÂ? cominÂ? on When retribution sings her song (When one by one we will atone) And each of us who blurs that line Will bow to judgment in due time I feel IÂ?m low when I myself Pass sentence down on someone else I know IÂ?ll fall right after you If I say that I could never do I must apologize to you And thatÂ?s the hardest thing to do If you persist in selling lies YouÂ?ll betray your own soul so much more than mine
