about

A classic American love ballad written by Stephen Foster, this dreamy love song may have a deeper meaning. Listening to the lyrics carefully, it is not too difficult to imagine that the beautiful dreamer being sung about is actually dead. Foster may have written it in ode to his departed sister Charlotte whose death affected him greatly for the rest of his writing career.

lyrics

Beautiful dreamer come unto me
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee
Sounds of the rude world heard in the day
Lulled by the moonlight have all passed away

Beautiful dreamer queen of my song
List' while I woo thee with soft melody
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng
Beautiful dreamer awake unto me
Beautiful dreamer awake unto me

Beautiful dreamer out on the sea
Mermaids are chanting the wild lorelie
Over the streamlet vapors are borne
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn

Beautiful dreamer beam on my heart
Then will the clouds of sorrow depart
Even as morn on the streamlet and sea
Beautiful dreamer awake unto me
Beautiful dream awake unto me
