Endlessly

from Long Time Gone by Gary L. Rebholz

/

about

A song with a melancholy feel, yet which at the same time, expresses the hopefulness of true love that survives even through less-than-optimal history. The song takes the listener through three seemingly unrelated verses which each express manifestations of endless love. This concept of endless love ties the three verses together and ultimately leaves the song with a hopeful message, regardless of its rather bleak musical tone.

I drive by a dark and depressing roadside shrine on my way to work. It is indeed nailed to some dark tree and it's falling into neglect after several years. I mean no disrespect to the people who honor their loved ones and deal with their loss in this way, but it's not for me. This brought out the first verse of the song and once the concept of endless love was in place, I searched for other ways to express it. The other two verses took on the somber tone of the first. I wanted a song that feels and sounds sad, and yet is actually hopeful and loving if you listen closely enough.

lyrics

Don't want no roadside shrine
Nailed to some dark tree
Just spread my ashes to the wind
And let my poor soul be
Then console my lovely wife
And tell her once for me
I love her more than life itself
I love her endlessly

I've broken more commandments
Then I found strength to keep
I've worried my dear mother
And gave her cause to weep
I pray that in the balance
I've brought more joy than grief
And those I've hurt
Will know that I
Have loved them endlessly

I've watched my grey-haired parents
Work it to the bone
They built a house
With bare hands
And then they built a home
I blamed them for some problems
That surely came from me
And through it all
I know that they
Have loved me endlessly
