about

It's origins are unknown, but the blackface minstrel group, The Virginia Minstrels popularized this song in the 1840s. It's a silly story of Old Dan Tucker who comes to town and causes any manner of havoc and misadventure. It has many known alternate verses.

lyrics

Well Old Dan Tucker was a fine old man
Washed his face in a fryin' pan
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel
Died with a toothache in his heal

Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
You're too late to get your supper

Old Dan Tucker came to town
Ridin' a billygoat leadin' a hound
Hound dog barked billy goat jumped
Throwed Dan Tucker down a holler stump

Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
You're too late to get your supper

Now old Dan Tucker got drunk and fell
Into the fire and kicked holy hell
A red-hot coal fell in his shoe
And oh my lawd the ashes flew

Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
You're too late to get your supper

Now Old Dan Tucker come to town
Swingin' them ladies all around
First to the right then to the left
And then to the gal that he loves best

Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
Get out the way Old Dan Tucker
You're too late to get your supper
