about

An American folk and cowboy standard of unknown origin. It has been traced back at least to the late 1800s and has become one of the most popular of American folk songs. A story of a lonesome cowboy imploring his sweetheart not to leave their lovely Red River valley.

lyrics

From this valley they say you are going
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
For they say you are taking the sunshine
That has brightened our path for a while

Come and sit by my side if you love me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
But remember the Red River valley
And the cowboy who loved you so true

Won't you think of the valley you're leaving
Oh how lonely how sad it will be
Oh think of the fond heart you're breaking
And the grief that you're causing to me

Come and sit by my side if you love me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
But remember the Red River valley
And the cowboy who loved you so true
